Background of the Study
Calabar South is renowned for its rich indigenous musical traditions that have been nurtured over generations. In recent years, however, foreign music genres have increasingly penetrated the local music scene, influencing both performance styles and audience preferences (Offiong, 2023). The influx of global music trends—ranging from hip-hop to electronic dance music—has created a dynamic cultural interplay, where traditional musical forms face the risk of being overshadowed or transformed (Etuk, 2024). Indigenous musicians and cultural custodians express concern that the popularity of foreign genres may lead to a gradual erosion of local musical heritage. Yet, there is also potential for creative fusion, where elements of foreign music complement traditional sounds (Ifeanyi, 2025). This study assesses the impact of these external influences on indigenous musical traditions in Calabar South, exploring whether the integration of foreign genres dilutes or enriches the local music culture. The research gathers insights from musicians, audiences, and cultural experts to examine the evolving nature of musical expression and its implications for cultural continuity (Akpan, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
The growing popularity of foreign music genres in Calabar South has raised concerns about the preservation of indigenous musical traditions (Udo, 2023). Traditional musicians face challenges in maintaining authentic practices as global music influences dominate local media and entertainment. This shift may result in a loss of cultural identity and a decline in the performance of indigenous music. The study seeks to investigate the extent of this influence and determine measures that could help safeguard local musical heritage against overwhelming foreign trends (Offiong, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess the impact of foreign music genres on indigenous musical practices.
2. To document changes in local music trends over time.
3. To recommend strategies for preserving indigenous music.
Research Questions:
1. How have foreign music genres influenced indigenous musical traditions in Calabar South?
2. What changes are evident in local music practices?
3. What measures can protect indigenous musical heritage?
Research Hypotheses:
1. H1: Foreign music genres significantly alter indigenous musical expressions.
2. H2: Traditional music practices are in decline due to external influences.
3. H3: Community-based initiatives can preserve indigenous musical heritage.
Significance of the Study
This study is important for understanding how global music trends affect local cultural expressions. Its findings will assist policymakers and cultural promoters in designing initiatives that protect indigenous music while embracing creative fusion (Etuk, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the influence of foreign music genres on indigenous musical traditions in Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State, focusing solely on musical practices.
Definitions of Terms:
• Foreign Music Genres: International music styles that influence local musical trends.
• Indigenous Musical Traditions: Traditional music forms native to a community.
